Artists Statement
The first thing I try to determine before I start a painting is to
answer the question, “ What is special about this?” or “Why is this
capturing my attention?” Is it a thought or memory of the past or
just seizing the moment of the present? Maybe the scene is telling a
story of someone or something, typically, it is because I have a
fascination with a person or people within a scene or just the
subject itself.
People are ‘thought provoking’ to me. Who are they? What is their
life about? Why am I drawn to them? I want to express the essence of
the scene through my eyes and then give the viewer of the painting
the same opportunity of the visual thought process of the scene.
Oil painting is my opportunity to portray the activities that have
influenced my life’s interests...music, dance, theatre, home, travel
and people. Entertainment.
By using expressive brush strokes, rich color palette selections and
discerning choices of subject matter, my hope is to evoke a similar,
alluring thought or emotion from the viewer of, “How fun or
wonderful is that? How interesting to me! I love that too!”
